Following the death of Pope Francis, attention has turned to Ghanaian Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson as a leading candidate to become the next Pope. If chosen, Turkson would be the first Black Pope in the history of the Catholic Church.
Currently serving as the Chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, Cardinal Turkson is known for his moderate views, advocacy for social justice, and multilingual fluency. He has previously served as Archbishop of Cape Coast and head of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development.
With Africa’s Catholic population rapidly growing, the idea of an African Pope is gaining global support. The Vatican’s conclave to elect a new Pontiff is expected to commence soon.
