Ghana has lost one of its most iconic music legends. Charles Kojo Fosu, widely known by his stage name Daddy Lumba, has died at the age of 60 following a short illness.
The family of the renowned highlife musician announced his passing in a statement released on Saturday, July 26, 2025.
“With profound sorrow and deep grief, we announce the passing of Ghana’s beloved musical icon, Charles Kojo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, who passed away earlier today after a short illness,” the statement read.
The family described him as a cultural treasure whose music became a voice for generations. They asked for privacy during this time of mourning and said funeral details would be communicated in the coming days.
Born on September 29, 1964, in Nsuta in the Ashanti Region, Daddy Lumba became a household name in Ghana’s music industry, with a career that spanned over three decades. His unique style a fusion of traditional highlife and contemporary sounds reshaped the genre and attracted a wide fan base across Ghana and the diaspora.
He began his career in the 1980s with the Lumba Brothers, a duo he formed with fellow musician Nana Acheampong, before launching a successful solo journey. His debut album Yɛɛyɛ Aka Akwantuo Mu, released in 1989, catapulted him into stardom and marked the beginning of an illustrious solo career.
Daddy Lumba is remembered for an impressive catalogue of hit songs including Aben Wo Ha, Theresa, Sika Asem, Playboy, Dangerous, and Tokrom. His songs explored themes of love, heartbreak, resilience, and social issues resonating deeply with listeners of all ages.
