Alan Kyerematen, who recently resigned from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and announced his independent candidacy for the 2024 presidential election in Ghana, has pledged to process 60% of the country’s raw materials if elected. Kyerematen believes that the lack of value addition to Ghana’s raw materials is a significant factor leading to the loss of substantial foreign exchange. By adding value to these materials, not only will job opportunities be created, but Ghana’s economy will also benefit from increased foreign exchange earnings.
Having served as the Minister of Trade and Industry from 2003 to 2007 under former President J.A. Kufuor and again under President Akufo-Addo’s leadership from 2017 to January 2023, Kyerematen expressed his vision during a television interview on Silver TV as part of his campaign on October 2, 2023. He emphasized that, as an independent president, he would establish an inclusive government that harnesses the knowledge and experiences of individuals from diverse backgrounds, regardless of their political affiliations.
Kyerematen highlighted the opportunity for individuals who wish to serve in a government independent of any political party. By presenting himself as a neutral candidate, he aims to provide a platform for Ghanaians both within the country and abroad to contribute to the development of their nation.
Discussing his major policy objectives, the founder of the Movement for Change underlined the importance of currency stability, stating that without it, any attempts to improve the country’s economy would be futile. He also pledged to lower inflation and interest rates while reducing Ghana’s debt.
