Ghana is set to begin issuing chip-embedded passports on Monday, April 28, 2025, as part of efforts to enhance document security and improve travel efficiency.
This announcement was made by the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, during a press briefing in Accra on April 23.
The upgraded passports, initially launched in December 2024, are equipped with microchips that securely store biometric and photographic data. They also feature advanced anti-fraud elements, including both visible and concealed security markers, aligning with international standards.
In addition to improved security, the passports reflect Ghana’s cultural identity through the use of symbolic Adinkra designs, such as Fawohodie (Freedom and Independence) and Funtunfunefu Denkyemfunefu (Democracy and Cooperation).
Minister Ablakwa noted that the new e-passports are part of a broader digital reform strategy to modernize public services, eliminate the use of intermediaries in the application process, and promote greater transparency. The initiative also includes 24-hour passport processing, courier delivery options, an electronic tracking system, and a 30% reduction in passport application fees.
