The Ghana Police Service has launched a full-scale investigation into a viral video in which an American woman, identified as Arianna Naomi Mackey, claimed she was kidnapped and robbed in Accra by men she believed were police officers.
According to a statement issued by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on December 9, 2025, Mackey alleged in the video that five masked men, whom she claimed were officers of the Ghana Police Service on snap-check duty, abducted her and took an undisclosed amount of money from her.
Preliminary investigations by the CID revealed that the video was recorded at a hotel in Accra, where Mackey and two companions were lodging. Police confirmed that the group checked out on December 5, 2025, and later verified at Kotoka International Airport that Mackey left Ghana on the same day.
The statement noted that police contacted Mackey to assist with the investigation. She reportedly said she was outside the country and was unable to provide the names of the alleged officers involved or the vehicle’s number plate.
Police also requested the contact details of a friend she said was with her during the alleged incident. However, according to Mackey, her friend preferred not to be involved in the case.
Investigators further disclosed that Mackey had deleted the viral video from her social media platform. Attempts to reach her through WhatsApp calls and messages were unsuccessful, as she stopped responding and later blocked the investigation team.
The Ghana Police Service indicated that efforts are ongoing to reach her through diplomatic channels to aid the investigation.
The CID emphasised that the Service treats such allegations with utmost seriousness and is committed to establishing the facts of the case.
The statement was signed by Chief Inspector Brigitte Babanawo, Public Relations Officer of the Criminal Investigation Department.
