The Ashanti Regional Police Command has successfully dismantled a criminal syndicate responsible for a string of targeted vehicle break-ins and thefts across the Kumasi Metropolis. The group, largely composed of foreign nationals, is believed to have trailed victims from financial institutions and stolen large sums of money from their parked vehicles.
According to a press release issued by the Public Affairs Directorate of the Ghana Police Service on June 23, 2025, the gang typically operated using Toyota Highlander vehicles with fake registration numbers. They would monitor and follow their targets before striking.
A coordinated intelligence and surveillance operation involving the Police Intelligence Directorate and the intelligence video surveillance (IVS) system led to the arrest of three key suspects on June 19, 2025. The suspects Russell Ekenze, Francis Friday, and Linus Agwazie were traced and arrested. Tools used in the thefts were found in their possession.
The suspects admitted to multiple criminal acts and named additional accomplices. One of them, Cosmas Madubachukwu, is still at large. Two women, Gifty Ozurumbam and Gladys Ibrahim, were also arrested for obstructing police investigations.
In total, five individuals are currently in police custody and are expected to face court proceedings. The police stated that the syndicate is mainly composed of Nigerian nationals, with one Ghanaian among them. The investigation continues in partnership with the Greater Accra Regional Police Command.
In a related development, the Nkawie Divisional Police Command has arrested a suspect in connection with a recent case of robbery and murder. William Ofori Atta, 29, was apprehended at Kukuom in the Ahafo Region for allegedly participating in the robbery and killing of Emmanuel Kwabena Boakye, 28, on May 26, 2025, at the Radiance Filling Station in Mpasatia, Ashanti Region.
Police say the arrest followed a coordinated investigation by the Ashanti Regional Cyber Crime Unit, the Kukuom Police, and the Nkawie Divisional Command.
The Ghana Police Service has assured the public that efforts are ongoing to arrest all remaining suspects and ensure justice is served.
