In a bid to motivate the players of the Ghana national football team, the Black Stars, each player is set to pocket a substantial $30,000 bonus if the team successfully progresses from the group stage of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The announcement comes on the heels of a challenging start for Chris Hughton’s side, which suffered a defeat against Cape Verde and managed a draw with Egypt in their first two group matches.
Despite these setbacks, the Black Stars have an opportunity for redemption in their crucial final Group B fixture against Mozambique scheduled for Monday evening. A victory in this match would propel Ghana to four points, potentially securing them second place or one of the coveted best four third-place slots.
This qualification bonus marks a departure from the traditional winning bonuses, as revealed by Akwesi Agyemang, the vice-chairman of the Black Stars management committee, before the Qatar 2022 World Cup. The decision to replace winning bonuses with qualification bonuses was reached after thorough discussions with the players.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports, however, remains tight-lipped about the overall budget allocated for Ghana’s participation in the 2023 AFCON. Charles Amofa, the ministry’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), emphasized that the budget details would only be disclosed after the conclusion of the tournament. He explained that the AFCON budget is still a work in progress, with ongoing deliberations and daily expenditures.
Amofa urged Ghanaians to focus on supporting Chris Hughton and the players, urging them to channel their energies into positive thoughts and prayers for the success of the team in Ivory Coast
