Ghana Anticipates 100,000 International Tourists for Christmas Celebrations

 

The Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture in Ghana is eagerly anticipating the arrival of around 100,000 international tourists during the festive Christmas season. This influx of visitors is expected to significantly bolster the tourism sector, with tourists projected to spend on accommodations, dining, and exploration of various tourist attractions including the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum.

During a workshop in Koforidua, Dr. Ibrahim Awal, the Minister of Tourism Arts and Culture, revealed this exciting projection. The Ministry has set an ambitious target of hosting two million international tourists annually by 2026, aiming to generate an average of $6 billion per year, thereby becoming the primary contributor to the country’s GDP.

The upcoming period, known as “Detty December,” transforms Accra and major cities into vibrant hubs filled with a rich tapestry of events, music, and cultural celebrations. Drawing in thousands of individuals globally, particularly from the diaspora, this time offers not only entertainment but also serves as an opportunity for connection with ancestral roots.

Dr. Ibrahim Awal highlighted that the expected tourists won’t spend less than $3000 each, benefiting the local populace. Additionally, progress in the arts sector was mentioned, with two out of five promised amphitheaters currently under construction.

Geoffrey Tamakloe, a Principal Tourism Officer, called upon the media to play a pivotal role as ambassadors for tourism promotion. The workshop witnessed the participation of directors from the Ministry of Tourism Arts and Culture, engaging journalists from various regions such as Greater Accra, Eastern, Volta, and Oti.

Overall, Ghana’s tourism sector gears up for a bustling and culturally enriching festive season, poised to welcome a substantial influx of international tourists seeking both enjoyment and connections to the nation’s heritage.
