The Ministry of Energy has confirmed that the much-debated GH₵1 fuel levy will officially take effect on Monday, July 14, 2025. The levy, aimed at addressing long-standing challenges within the energy sector, is part of the government’s broader efforts to stabilise the power industry and strengthen energy infrastructure.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Friday, the Ministry’s spokesperson, Richmond Rockson, announced the start date and explained the rationale behind the policy. “We will start on Monday, July 14,” he stated. “This government inherited a very difficult energy sector — not just the power sector, but also petroleum, both upstream and downstream. It will take all of us as citizens to sacrifice in order to bring the sector back.”

Rockson pointed to deep-rooted financial challenges and structural inefficiencies in the energy sector, noting that the levy is a necessary intervention to sustain power generation and ensure long-term energy security.

The GH₵1 fuel levy, first announced several months ago, has been met with strong criticism from the public and opposition political figures who argue it will worsen the cost of living. Many Ghanaians have expressed concerns over fuel price hikes and broader economic hardship.

Despite the backlash, the Energy Ministry maintains that the levy is critical to sector recovery. The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has been authorised to handle its collection starting next week.

The government hopes the new revenue stream will help address debts and inefficiencies that have plagued the sector for years, and ultimately contribute to a more reliable and resilient national energy supply.
