The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has reclaimed more than 16 acres of valuable airport-adjacent land from the McDan Group of Companies, following a decisive ruling by the Accra High Court.

The ruling, delivered on May 6, 2025, granted GACL full possession and re-entry rights to two parcels of land near Kotoka International Airport (KIA), measuring approximately 10.63 and 5.66 acres. The lands, situated close to Action Chapel International, had been occupied by McDan Shipping Company and Airport Logistics Limited both subsidiaries of the McDan Group since 2012.

GACL initiated legal proceedings in February 2025, citing repeated breaches of lease agreements and failure to pay ground rent. The company demanded recovery of $26,296 in arrears and a perpetual injunction to prevent further encroachment on the properties. It filed for summary judgment, arguing that the defendants had no valid defense.

The court sided with GACL, granting all reliefs requested, including GH¢50,000 in legal costs.

This victory follows recent tensions between GACL and McDan Aviation, which faced suspension of operations at Terminal 1 in December 2024 due to unpaid debts. Though those debts were eventually settled, the land dispute remained unresolved until now.

A GACL source described the ruling as a major success for state asset protection and responsible governance.

“The repossession of these lands not only safeguards millions of dollars’ worth of public property but also demonstrates our commitment to accountability and transparency,” the source said.

The legal win is credited to collaborative efforts between GACL’s Legal Department and Managing Director, Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, who has led a drive to reclaim strategic assets and improve management practices.
