Authorities in Namibia are investigating the tragic deaths of four children who were trapped in an old, non-functional freezer while playing in the town of Katima Mulilo, located in the north-eastern Zambezi Region. The children, aged between three and six, were discovered on Monday afternoon, having been accidentally locked inside the freezer.
According to reports, the children suffocated after being trapped for about an hour and a half. Two of them died at the scene, while the other two were rushed to Katima Mulilo State Hospital, where they were pronounced dead upon arrival.
Zambezi regional police commander Andreas Shilelo explained that the freezer, which was left outside a house, had a hook that could only be opened from the outside, making it impossible for the children to escape. The incident has left the community in shock as investigations continue.
One of the fathers, Aranges Shoro, recounted the heart-wrenching moment he arrived to see paramedics attending to his daughter and another child. Both were later declared dead at the hospital.
The circumstances surrounding why the unused freezer was left outside remain unclear, but authorities are looking into the matter to prevent future occurrences of such tragic accidents.
