Four Arrested in Ohwim Robbery; Alleged Gang Leader Killed During Operation

The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has confirmed the arrest of four suspects linked to a deadly robbery at Ohwim Tigo Junction in Kumasi, which claimed one life.

The incident occurred on February 10 when armed men reportedly shot and robbed a victim identified as Andrews Amankwa, making away with his Toyota Hilux vehicle. The victim later died at the hospital while receiving treatment.

According to the IGP, intensified police operations led to the first breakthrough on February 18, when Akwasi Manu was arrested with a mobile phone belonging to the deceased. He was subsequently arraigned before the Asokwa Circuit Court II on February 20 on charges of possessing stolen property and remanded into police custody. He is expected to reappear before the court on March 5.

Further intelligence-led investigations resulted in the arrest of Bashiru Tanko on February 19 at Atonsu High School Junction in Kumasi. Two more suspects, Kojo Amponsah and Emmanuel Kwame Appiah, were apprehended on February 21 and 22 at Hwireso near Buokrom and the Danyame Soldier Barracks respectively.

Police also disclosed that another suspect, Eric Antwi Doku, who sustained gunshot wounds during the operation, later died. The IGP stated that investigations revealed the group operated as a criminal syndicate allegedly specializing in the snatching of pickup trucks and Toyota Land Cruiser vehicles.

The Ghana Police Service says investigations are ongoing as authorities work to dismantle the network and bring all involved persons to justice.
