He died on Monday, February 16, 2026, at the University of Ghana Medical Centre, where he had been receiving medical care. His death was confirmed by his widow, Mrs Naziha Alhassan, on Radio Univers. She said he passed away at about 10:15 a.m.
Dr Ahmed dedicated more than three decades of service to Radio Univers, the non-commercial, campus-based radio station of the University of Ghana. He began his journey as a student journalist and rose through the ranks to become Station Manager, earning recognition as the longest-serving staff member in the station’s history.
His tenure was marked by discipline, mentorship and an unwavering commitment to excellence in campus broadcasting. Beyond the university community, Dr Ahmed played a significant role in shaping Ghana’s media landscape, mentoring generations of journalists who have excelled both locally and internationally.
Although he stepped down from active management in 2025, he remained a respected and influential figure within the Radio Univers fraternity, offering guidance and serving as a repository of institutional memory for young broadcasters.
Dr Ahmed was also the former host of Behind the Headlines, a widely followed news review and analysis programme on the station.
In recognition of his decades of dedicated service, Radio Univers alumni organised a special dinner in his honour on June 6, 2025, two days after his birthday. The event brought together colleagues, alumni and distinguished personalities from academia, the media and the judiciary.
