Former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, has passed away at the age of 82. His death was confirmed on Sunday, July 13, 2025, through an official statement shared by his press secretary, Garba Shehu, via Buhari’s verified X (formerly Twitter) account.

The statement read:
“INNA LILLAHI WA INNA ILAIHI RAJI’UN. The family has announced the passing of the former President, Muhammadu Buhari, this afternoon, in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin.”

Buhari had been abroad since April 2025 for what was initially described as a routine medical check-up in the United Kingdom. However, sources close to the family revealed that his health deteriorated shortly after his arrival. He remained in the UK for treatment until his passing.

Born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, Muhammadu Buhari rose through the ranks of the Nigerian military before entering national politics. He first served as Nigeria’s military head of state from January 1984 to August 1985 following a coup, before being overthrown in another military takeover.

Decades later, in 2015, Buhari was elected president of Nigeria on the ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC), becoming the first opposition candidate to defeat an incumbent president in Nigeria’s democratic history. He was re-elected in 2019 and served until May 29, 2023.

Throughout his presidency, Buhari was known for his anti-corruption drive, his push for economic reforms, and efforts to strengthen national security, although his administration faced criticism over rising insecurity, economic challenges, and frequent foreign medical trips.

Buhari lost his father at a young age and was raised by his mother, Zulaiha. He received his early education in Daura and Maiduguri, before moving on to Katsina Middle School and later Government College, Katsina. He joined the Nigerian Army in 1961 and trained both in Nigeria and abroad, including at Mons Officer Cadet School in the UK, the Defence Services Staff College in India, and the US Army War College.

He held several key positions, including Military Governor of the North Eastern State, Federal Commissioner of Petroleum Resources, and Chairman of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation. He was also a member of the Supreme Military Council before becoming military ruler in 1983.

Buhari was first married to Safinatu Yusuf and later to Aisha Halilu. He is survived by his wife, Aisha, and ten children.
