The death of Ghanaian student Nana Agyei Ahyia in Latvia has sparked growing concern among his family and Ghanaian authorities, prompting the Foreign Minister and a delegation to travel to the country for further investigations.
Nana Agyei, a first-year Electrical Engineering (Adaptronic) student at Riga Technical University, enrolled in July 2024 and had been living in an apartment on Baznicas Street in Riga.
In the days leading up to his death on June 4, 2025, he reportedly sent a voice message to relatives expressing fears about his safety. Shortly after, the family was informed that he had died under circumstances that remain unclear.
Doubting the initial explanation, the family insisted that Nana Agyei had no known history of emotional distress and would not have intentionally harmed himself. They subsequently wrote to the Foreign Ministry, his school and the police, seeking answers.
According to family spokesperson Sarah Nimli, their efforts did not receive the expected response, raising concerns about transparency in the investigation.
After months of unanswered questions, a family member travelled to Latvia with support from the Ghana Embassy in Berlin, which oversees Ghana’s affairs in Latvia, to pursue further clarification.
The visit by the Foreign Minister and delegation is aimed at ensuring a thorough and transparent investigation, as well as providing support to the bereaved family.
