A fire outbreak on Tuesday, December 17, destroyed several ballot boxes stored at the Kwashieman Cluster of Schools in Accra. The boxes were part of the ongoing electoral process for the Ablekuma North constituency following the December 7 general elections.
The fire reportedly started in the school’s library, which had been converted into a temporary storage space for the ballot boxes. Eyewitnesses reported thick smoke and flames engulfing the building early in the morning.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) quickly responded to the scene. Public Relations Officer Alex King Nartey, in a livestream update, confirmed that fire officers from Anyaa, Headquarters, and Circle worked together to control the blaze.
“Information we have gathered indicates that the school was used to store ballot boxes. The flames have been subdued, and we worked hard to prevent the fire from reigniting,” Nartey stated.
The Ablekuma North constituency has been at the center of electoral disputes, with its results under contention. Both the NPP candidate, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, and the NDC candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn, have claimed victory despite the Electoral Commission (EC) initially declaring the seat for the NDC.
The EC later reversed its decision, calling the initial declaration illegal, and announced plans for a re-collation exercise. The fire adds another layer of complexity to the contested parliamentary race, which remains one of the most closely watched across the country.
