A tragic incident at O’Reilly Senior High School in Accra on Monday, September 2, 2024, resulted in the death of a final year General Arts student, Edward Borketey Sackey. The 18-year-old was allegedly stabbed to death by a fellow student following a heated argument that reportedly stemmed from a debate over whose father was wealthier.
According to eyewitness accounts, including a cousin of the deceased, the altercation occurred shortly after Edward had completed an exam. The disagreement escalated quickly, leading to a physical confrontation with a classmate identified as Godwin. The argument, initially trivial, turned violent as the two students fought, culminating in Edward being stabbed three times in the chest.
Despite seeking help from teachers on the school premises as the situation deteriorated, Edward received no intervention, according to his cousin. In a desperate bid for assistance, she attempted to alert her uncle, who had a shop nearby, but returned to find that Edward had already been gravely injured.
Godwin, a final year Visual Arts student, was allegedly known to carry a bag containing dangerous items, including a knife, which he used in the fatal attack. The cousin claimed that even after Edward was stabbed, the teachers remained indifferent, and it was a passerby who ultimately helped transport Edward to the LEKMA Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The father of the deceased is now calling for justice and demanding answers from both the school authorities and the family of the alleged attacker. He expressed frustration over the lack of communication from the school and police regarding the incident and is seeking accountability for the loss of his son.
As of now, the school authorities and the police have not issued any official statements concerning the tragic event.
