Four executives from the Effutu constituency of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Central Region have been reportedly denied bail following their arrest by the police, as disclosed by their lawyer, Mohammed Kofi Twumasi Naya.
According to Naya, the denial of bail was communicated by police officers, citing an order allegedly from Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
The executives were apprehended by the police while accompanying nine individuals arrested during a lawful demonstration in Effutu. Naya clarified that the nine detainees were granted bail by the court on Wednesday, where he represented them. However, immediately after their bail, the police arrested the four NDC constituency executives, who have since remained in police custody without the possibility of securing bail.
In an interview with Citi News, Naya expressed concern over the lack of evidence implicating the constituency executives in any wrongdoing, highlighting that there was no proof supporting the police’s allegations of stone-throwing against them. He suggested that the arrests appeared to carry political motives, asserting that it seemed to be a demonstration of power over the executives.
Naya further emphasized that instead of seeking an injunction through legal channels if the police had concerns, they opted to detain the executives. He pointed out that the arrests seemed unjustified and politically driven, targeting the constituency chairman, youth organizer, women organizer, and treasurer without substantiated evidence against them.
The situation continues to unfold amidst claims of political motivations behind the arrests, while efforts to secure bail for the detained NDC executives remain unsuccessful.
