ECOWAS Court Orders Ghana to Compensate Shalimar Abbiusi for Rights Violations

Shalimar Abbiusi, spokesperson for the New Force, has secured a significant legal victory at the ECOWAS Court, which ruled that Ghana violated her fundamental rights during her arrest, detention, and deportation in December 2023.

Ms. Abbiusi, a Belgian national, had accused Ghana’s immigration and National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) officers of subjecting her to inhumane treatment. Her case detailed the injustices she endured, including wrongful arrest and re-arrest, despite all charges against her being dropped by the State Prosecutor.

The ECOWAS Court, in its ruling on November 22, 2024, found that Ghana’s actions contravened Article 6 of the Liberty of People, leading to significant damage to Ms. Abbiusi’s personal and professional reputation. The court ordered the Ghanaian government to compensate her, emphasizing accountability and justice.

Francis-Xavier Sosu, the Madina legislator and part of Ms. Abbiusi’s legal team alongside Attorney Belinda Narkey Quaynor, expressed gratitude for the judgment. “We feel vindicated that the ECOWAS Court has protected the rights of Shalimar,” Sosu stated.

The New Force, in a statement, praised the ruling and reiterated its commitment to justice across Africa. The movement urged the Ghanaian government to respect human rights and uphold the rule of law, describing the actions against Ms. Abbiusi as indicative of broader political persecution.

The group called on civil society organizations, human rights defenders, and the international community to denounce such violations and support institutional reforms to prevent future occurrences.
