Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, commonly known as NAPO, is scheduled to be formally introduced as the running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), on Tuesday, July 9, in a much-anticipated ceremony.
The presentation of NAPO as Dr. Bawumia’s running mate will occur in Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region, a traditional bastion of the NPP. Francis Adomako, the Ashanti Regional Organiser of the NPP, noted that the region is eagerly looking forward to the event.
On Friday, July 5, the National Council of the NPP officially endorsed NAPO as Dr. Bawumia’s running mate.
This decision has garnered widespread praise from senior party members, including President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who has expressed confidence in the duo’s capability to secure victory for the party in the 2024 general elections.
In a statement, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh expressed deep gratitude to Dr. Bawumia for the trust placed in him, promising to work diligently with Dr. Bawumia to achieve a decisive win for the party in the forthcoming elections.
The NPP has staunchly defended NAPO against criticisms of his perceived arrogance. In response to the backlash, some stakeholders have suggested that NAPO should use prepared speeches in future public engagements to manage his messaging and avoid potential blunders.
The NPP has also officially opened nominations for the Manhyia South constituency, following Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s appointment as the party’s running mate.
This move has left the Manhyia South Parliamentary seat vacant, although an official declaration from Parliament is still pending.
The party has promised a transparent electoral process and has urged potential candidates to be cautious with their statements, emphasizing the internal nature of this matter.
NAPO’s brother, Nana Owusu Afriyie Prempeh, is reportedly interested in the same parliamentary seat, potentially leading to a family rivalry in the political sphere.
The stage is set for a highly competitive presidential election in 2024, with the NPP’s team of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO) set to compete against the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ticket of former President John Dramani Mahama and Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.
