The Parliamentary Select Committee on Sanitation has urged the Youth Employment Authority (YEA) not to end its contract with Zoomlion Ghana Limited, despite public criticism from investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni.

Azure had accused Zoomlion, a subsidiary of the Jospong Group, of exploiting sanitation workers and breaching contract terms. However, during a tour of the Kumasi Compost and Recycling Plant on April 24, 2025, Committee Chairman and MP for Nkwanta North, John Kwabena Bless Oti, dismissed those claims, stating that ending the contract could result in significant job losses.

He acknowledged that while the committee values transparency, the journalist would be invited to formally present his evidence to Parliament before any decisions are made. Oti stressed the importance of addressing internal concerns constructively and proposed setting up a sanitation fund to support waste management nationwide.

He further assured that the current government is committed to clearing arrears owed to YEA workers and Zoomlion, highlighting an allocation of GH¢13 billion in the budget to settle such debts.

Supporting the Chairman’s remarks, the Ranking Member and MP for Achiase, Kofi Ahenkorah Marfo, also emphasized the need for accountability in managing the proposed sanitation fund.

Meanwhile, Eugene Amo Asamoah, Business Development Manager of the Kumasi Compost and Recycling Plant, revealed that although Ghana generates over one million tonnes of plastic waste yearly, only 2 to 5 percent is recycled. He urged the government to settle outstanding arrears and boost funding for waste management to enhance environmental sustainability.
