Parliament has approved the C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (Amendment) Bill, 2025, paving the way for the institution to be renamed the University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS), Navrongo.
The approval follows concerns raised by some stakeholders, including traditional authorities and community leaders, who argued that the existing name of the university was exclusionary and potentially divisive. These concerns were formally submitted to the Ministry of Education, prompting government intervention.
According to the government, the amendment is aimed at promoting inclusivity and strengthening national cohesion, while also aligning the institution’s name with internationally accepted naming conventions in higher education.
Located in Navrongo in the Upper East Region, the university is among Ghana’s newest public universities. It was established to provide practical, technology-driven education with a strong emphasis on applied sciences, innovation, and skills development to support national development.
Government officials believe the new name will help position the university as a truly national institution, encourage broader stakeholder ownership, and enhance its attractiveness to students, researchers, and development partners both locally and internationally.
Following parliamentary approval, the name change will take effect after presidential assent, after which all official records and branding of the university will be updated accordingly.
