A raging fire tore through the Arts Centre in Accra on the evening of Tuesday, June 24, destroying several shops and leaving artisans and small business owners counting heavy financial losses.
The blaze, which started around 6:15 p.m., is believed to have been sparked by a faulty gas cylinder. Eyewitnesses reported that a worker attempting to boil water accidentally ignited the fire, which quickly spread through the wooden structures that make up much of the centre.
By the time fire officers arrived, numerous shops had been reduced to ashes. Victims, many of whom are artisans and traders, estimated their losses to run into thousands of cedis.
“I’ve lost all my equipment. How will I survive? How will I take care of my children?” said Esther Atanga, a seamstress and single mother, as she fought back tears.
Another affected shop owner lamented, “I had three machines in the building. I couldn’t salvage anything due to the intensity of the fire. We’ve lost a lot. God being so good, no one was hurt. At this point, we urge the government to come to our aid.”
Though no injuries were reported, the emotional and financial impact has left many devastated and without a source of income.
Victims are appealing to the government and benevolent individuals and organisations to support them as they begin the painful journey of rebuilding their businesses and livelihoods.
