The 29th Conference of Parties (COP29) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) opened in Baku, Azerbaijan, on November 12, 2024, with a strong plea for world leaders to agree on a new global climate finance goal. The call, made by UNFCCC Executive Secretary Simon Stiell, emphasized the far-reaching impacts of the climate crisis, which is devastating economies and affecting every individual worldwide.
Stiell urged that no country should hinder global efforts to tackle the climate crisis, stressing the need for a collective approach to address the growing challenges. He pointed out that while climate change affects everyone, no single COP event could provide the full transformation needed. Thus, COP29 must prioritize agreement on a new climate finance goal to accelerate climate action.
With over 50,000 delegates from across the globe, including more than 100 African government representatives, COP29 has become one of the largest gatherings to drive progress towards the goals of the Paris Agreement. Delegates from UN member states, the European Union, and other entities such as the State of Palestine are attending the two-week summit.
Key topics discussed will include climate finance, energy, peace, sustainable development, technology, innovation, human development, health, food, water, agriculture, urbanization, and gender equality.
Stiell emphasized that COP29 is a critical platform for bold and open discussions on climate financing, calling for nations to act in their self-interest by supporting an ambitious climate finance goal. He stated that climate finance should not be seen as charity but as essential to the survival and well-being of all countries, including the wealthiest.
He also highlighted the importance of finalizing international carbon markets under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and advancing mitigation efforts to ensure the targets set at COP28 are achieved. Stiell warned that without swift action, the 1.5°C target would slip out of reach.
**Critical Issues and Resilience**
Stiell stressed the need for world leaders to work together and leverage technology, human ingenuity, and partnerships to combat the climate crisis. He warned that failure to act would lead to dire consequences for humanity and the planet. He urged nations to strengthen global resilience, improve supply chains, and enhance financial and technical support for loss and damage due to climate change.
COP29 serves as a pivotal moment for international collaboration to address the climate crisis and protect the future of the planet.
