JUST IN: Commercial Drivers Call Off Nationwide Strike

News gathered by GhArticles.com indicates that the Coalition of Commercial Transport Owners have suspended their nationwide strike.

According to a press release sighted online, the GPRTU stated that the strike has been called off because the government has invited the leadership for deliberation.

They leadership added in that letter that any further information about the strike will be communicated to it’s members soon.

Earlier on, GhArticles.com reported that effective today, the Coalition of Commercial Transport Owners have announced its intention to embark on a nationwide indefinite strike, as part of measures to compel the government to scrap some taxes on fuel to enable reduction at the pumps.

According to the Coalition, the government for the past two weeks has failed to heed their calls for some taxes to be scrapped off hence the decision to embark on the sit-down strike.

The group has asked its members to put on red armbands to register their displeasure with the government.

The coalition of private transport operators consists of Ghana Private Road and Transport Union (GPRTU), Association of Tipper Truck Drivers, Harbor Transport Owners, Ghana National Cargo Transport Association, Ghana Committed Drivers Association, Concerned Drivers Association, Digital Drivers, Commercial motorbike riders, popularly referred to as Okada, the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers among others.

Following that, hundreds of workers were left stranded in multiple lorry stations across Ghana over Trotro Drivers sit-down strike against high fuel prices in the country.

Ashaiman for instance, commercial drivers decided to turn the lorry station into a football field as they were seen playing football as passengers looked stranded.
