The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has revealed that the government will recruit 50,000 teachers and 10,000 non-teaching staff in 2025 as part of efforts to strengthen Ghana’s education sector.

Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, June 25, the Minister assured lawmakers that adequate financial provisions have been made in the 2025 national budget to support the recruitment drive.

“Mr. Speaker, as I have assured this House, 50,000 teachers will be recruited, along with 10,000 non-teaching staff. Adequate provision was made for this in the 2025 budget,” Haruna Iddrisu said.

His statement followed concerns raised by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who called for a probe into reports of teachers allegedly being manhandled during a protest at the Ghana Education Service (GES) headquarters.

Addressing the issue, the Minister explained that although financial clearance for recruitment was received in May, a delayed start in September caused the clearance to expire by December 31. He stated that a new clearance is being processed.

“They were expected to start work in August but began in September. Naturally, by December 31, the clearance had expired. They can only proceed with a renewed clearance, which I am currently awaiting,” he explained.

Mr. Iddrisu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to resolving outstanding posting issues and ensuring that all new recruits are deployed effectively to improve learning outcomes across the country.
