Executives and members of the Coalition of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) in Water and Sanitation (CONIWAS), a leading Civil Society Organization working in the field of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH), paid a courtesy visit to Dr. Freda Akosua Prempeh, the Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources (MSWR), at her ministry in Accra.
The delegation, led by CONIWAS, included representatives from the Council of Elders, newly elected national officers, and the Executive Secretary.
During the meeting, Dr. Freda Prempeh, who assumed office a few months ago, urged CONIWAS and other stakeholders to collaborate closely with her ministry to address the challenges within the sector. She emphasized the importance of open dialogue and cooperation, encouraging both local and international partners to engage constructively when they have differing views on the ministry’s work.
Mr. Martin Dery, a former chairperson of CONIWAS and a member of the Council of Elders, suggested the revival of the previously active Inter-Ministerial Committee, which has been inactive for a period. He explained that reestablishing this committee, comprising ministries such as MSWR, Gender, Women and Children Protection, Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation (MESTI), Education, Health, Local Government & Rural Development, and Finance, would promote better coordination and collaboration, ultimately benefiting the sector.
Mr. Dery emphasized that these ministries all play roles related to WASH issues and thus coming together within the Inter-Ministerial Committee would be a wise move for sector development.
The meeting also served as an opportunity to introduce the newly elected national officers of CONIWAS, with Madam Beata Awinpoka Akanyani as the current chairperson. Madam Akanyani previously served as the Vice Chairperson of the coalition.
This meeting signifies a positive step toward strengthening collaboration between the Ministry for Sanitation and Water Resources and key stakeholders in the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene sector, as they work together to address pressing challenges and advance the sector’s development.
