Coca-Cola Foundation Empowers 300 Women in Ghana with $200,000 Project

In a significant initiative aimed at fostering economic inclusion, the Coca-Cola Foundation has allocated $200,000 to support the ‘Economic Inclusion of Marginalized Women Living in Urban Centres’ project in Ghana. Spearheaded by the Network of Women in Growth, Ghana (NEWIG), the program focuses on empowering 300 young women, including those with disabilities, through training in mushroom farming, snail farming, and soap making.

During the project launch in Accra, Dr. Joyce Aryee, Executive Director of Salt and Light Ministries, commended NEWIG Ghana for its dedication to championing the cause of women. Dr. Aryee emphasized that initiatives like these contribute to building a society where every individual, irrespective of gender or circumstance, has the opportunity to thrive. She underscored the importance of economic empowerment for women, stating that it serves as a catalyst for positive societal change.

Ms. Mawulawoe Awity, Founder of NEWIG, highlighted the project’s two-year duration, emphasizing its goal of empowering women and recognizing their crucial role in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The initiative focuses on providing women with knowledge, vocational skills, and employability development to foster positive change and narrow the gender equality gap.

Research cited by Ms. Awity revealed that equipping women with vocational skills enhances their socio-economic status, promotes financial independence, and reduces vulnerability. Recognizing women as disproportionately affected by climate change and economic crises, she stressed the need to build their capacity and provide alternative sources of livelihood.

Ms. Awity expressed optimism that the project would have a meaningful impact on beneficiaries’ lives and contribute to the socio-economic development of Ghana. Mr. David Appiah, Senior Manager of Communication at Coca-Cola, affirmed the foundation’s commitment to supporting communities throughout the country.

The project’s focus on skill development and economic empowerment aligns with broader efforts to address gender disparities and uplift marginalized communities, marking a positive step towards a more inclusive and self-reliant society.
