A solemn gathering to mark the 40-day observance of the late former Akwatia MP, Ernest Kumi, nearly descended into chaos when supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) attempted to assault National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah.

The incident occurred at the Wenchi Durbar grounds on Friday, August 29, when Mr. Nketiah and his entourage arrived to commiserate with the bereaved family. Angry NPP women and some party supporters reportedly attempted to physically attack the NDC chairman and his security detail, prompting fierce resistance from his team.

The situation escalated until police personnel, together with members of the NDC delegation, intervened to restore calm. The MP for New Juaben South, Michael Kofi Okyere Baafi, NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye, and former Eastern Regional Chairman Kingston Akomeng Kissi also stepped in to pacify the supporters and ensure safe passage for the NDC chairman to greet former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Reacting to the incident, NDC Deputy General Secretary Mustapha Gbande described the confrontation as “unfortunate,” stressing that it contradicts ongoing national conversations about eschewing violence.

“This is worrying also because in the back of the conversation to eschew violence, look at what they have done at a funeral. We have taken a cue out of it, and it will redefine our relationship going into the election,” Mr. Gbande told Channel One News.
