A man in his late thirties has died after being electrocuted while attempting to steal an earth wire from the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) substation at Adoato, near the Metro Mass Transit Station in Greater Kumasi.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, April 19, caused widespread power outages across parts of Kumasi and its environs. According to ECG officials, the deceased was part of a group of individuals allegedly involved in a series of cable thefts in the Ashanti Region.
Collins Manu, Public Relations Officer for ECG’s Ashanti Substation, described the situation as a persistent threat. “This is not an isolated case. Since 2014, at least 133 people have lost their lives trying to steal electrical cables from ECG installations,” he revealed.
Mr. Manu emphasized that cable theft goes beyond being a criminal offense, calling it “a reckless gamble with life and a direct assault on communities relying on stable electricity.” He noted that these criminal acts have resulted in significant financial losses and service disruptions, affecting homes, businesses, and essential services.
Recent cases of vandalism have been reported not only at the Adoato Substation but also in areas like Adum Central Business District. Mr. Manu warned of the dangers of tampering with live electrical equipment and called on the public to remain vigilant.
“Safeguarding Ghana’s electrical infrastructure is a shared responsibility,” he stated, urging citizens to report suspicious activities and discourage others from engaging in such dangerous crimes.
