The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has announced the successful recovery of the black box from the Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter that crashed in the Adansi Akrofuom District on Wednesday, August 6.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, August 7, Dr. Amoakohene stated that a team of investigators located the black box at the crash site, marking a crucial development in efforts to determine the cause of the fatal incident.
The recovery team comprised officers from the Ghana Air Force and other military units, assisted by local residents and the Assembly Member for the area, who helped guide them through the forested terrain to the crash location.
The tragedy, regarded as one of Ghana’s worst aviation disasters in recent memory, claimed the lives of key government and military figures, including the Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.
Other victims included Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate; and Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress. The helicopter’s three crew members Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah also died in the crash.
Preliminary findings indicate the helicopter lost radar contact while en route to Obuasi, triggering an immediate search operation involving both military personnel and local authorities.
Investigators are now analyzing data from the black box to reconstruct the sequence of events that led to the disaster. Meanwhile, samples of the victims’ remains have been sent to South Africa for DNA testing to support the identification process.
