In a recent address at the NPP International Conference in Johannesburg, South Africa, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s Flagbearer, emphasized his commitment to accountability if elected President. He contrasted this with his main opponent, former President John Mahama, whom he claimed would not be accountable since he has stated he will not seek re-election.
Dr. Bawumia stressed that as someone new to the presidency, he would feel a stronger obligation to the Ghanaian people because he would have the opportunity to seek re-election in 2028. This, he argued, sets him apart from Mahama, who would be serving only one term.
Drawing attention to his track record as Vice President, Dr. Bawumia highlighted his hard work, credibility, and vision for Ghana’s future as reasons to vote for him. He asserted, “Apart from my proven track record as Vice President, hard work, credibility, and vision for the future of Ghana, another reason I should be voted for is that I will be more accountable to the people of Ghana than John Mahama.”
Dr. Bawumia also emphasized the need for leadership with credibility to tackle corruption and other long-standing issues. He presented himself as a problem solver and anti-corruption advocate, citing policies like the digital national identity system, the national property address system, mobile money interoperability, and the digitalization of public services as evidence of his commitment to addressing Ghana’s challenges.
He criticized Mahama’s record on corruption, questioning the former President’s commitment to fighting it. Dr. Bawumia highlighted the digitalization of public services as a key strategy in the fight against corruption and called for practical actions rather than mere rhetoric.
In closing, Dr. Bawumia reiterated his commitment to accountability and problem-solving, positioning himself as the candidate best suited to lead Ghana forward.
