The Director-General of the National Service Authority (NSA), Felix Gyamfi, has announced that prospective graduates without a valid Ghana Card will be ineligible for national service registration.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, February 13, 2025, Mr. Gyamfi emphasized that this measure is part of efforts to eliminate ghost names from the NSA payroll.
“If you do not have a valid Ghana Card ID, you will not be allowed into our system. If you are a prospective graduate and you do not have a valid Ghana Card to register, you will not be allowed to do national service. So, these are some of the pathways to take away the ghost names,” he stated.
He attributed the persistence of ghost names to the failure of previous management to implement proper verification measures.
“This was a leadership problem. The necessary checks that were meant to save taxpayers’ money should have been enforced but were neglected.”
A recent headcount of active National Service personnel, initiated by the Minister of Finance as a requirement for clearing outstanding allowances since August 2024, identified over 81,885 suspected ghost names on the NSA payroll.
The enforcement of the Ghana Card requirement is expected to enhance transparency and accountability in the national service registration process.
