The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has referred Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to the Privileges Committee after citing him for contempt. The move follows a petition submitted by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, who accused Afenyo-Markin of defying a parliamentary resolution.
The Speaker made the announcement during proceedings on Thursday, November 27, stating, “I refer the complaint against the Minority Leader to the Privileges Committee and report to the House.” He urged the Committee to handle the matter with professionalism and impartiality while advising MPs to avoid public commentary during the investigation.
The case stems from a dispute over Ghana’s representation in the ECOWAS Parliament. On November 11, Ayariga petitioned the Speaker, alleging that Afenyo-Markin violated a resolution that removed him from Ghana’s ECOWAS delegation.
According to Ayariga, the ECOWAS Parliament initially refused to swear in Ghana’s delegation after Afenyo-Markin appeared in Port Harcourt despite being replaced. The situation was only resolved after Ghana reportedly threatened to withdraw completely from the ECOWAS Parliament.
Ayariga described Afenyo-Markin’s conduct as a breach of parliamentary privilege and called for disciplinary action. The Privileges Committee is expected to investigate the matter and present its findings to the House.
