At least 50 people have been killed and several women and children abducted following a deadly attack on a village in northwestern Nigeria’s Zamfara state, a lawmaker has confirmed.

Hamisu A. Faru, the lawmaker representing Bukkuyum South, told Reuters that armed men stormed Tungan Dutse village at about 5 p.m. on Thursday and continued the assault until around 3:30 a.m. on Friday.

According to Faru, the attackers moved from one community to another, burning buildings and shooting residents who attempted to flee.

“They have been moving from one village to another … leaving at least 50 people dead,” he said in a telephone interview.

He added that the number of women and children abducted during the raid has not yet been determined, as traditional leaders and local authorities are still accounting for the missing.

A spokesperson for the Zamfara State Police Command did not respond to requests for comment at the time of filing the report.

A resident of Tungan Dutse, Abdullahi Sani, 41, said three members of his family were killed in the attack.

“No one slept yesterday; we are all in pain,” he said.

Sani also claimed that residents had alerted security forces and local authorities a day earlier after spotting more than 150 motorcycles carrying armed men, but their warning was not acted upon.

Insecurity remains a major challenge in Nigeria, with mounting pressure on the government to restore stability. The country has witnessed a surge in attacks attributed to armed groups commonly referred to as bandits, who have carried out deadly raids, kidnappings for ransom, and forced displacement across parts of northern Nigeria.
