The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has instructed the Queen Mother of Asante Mampong, Nana Agyakoma Difie II, to organize the burial of the late Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, within the next three weeks. The one-week observation is scheduled for Monday, May 12, after which the burial must take place promptly.

Otumfuo emphasized the need for urgency, halting all meetings of the Asanteman Council until the burial rites are completed. The King, whose 75th birthday falls on May 6, will observe the day solemnly in light of the Mamponghene’s passing.

Speaking at a gathering of Asanteman on May 5 in Kumasi, the Asantehene directed that a successor should be appointed immediately after the 40-day observation, who will then oversee the 80-day ceremony.

Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, the second-highest traditional authority in Asanteman and occupant of the Silver Stool, passed away on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025. His death was officially announced by Nana Boakye Yiadom Atonsa, the Gyaasehene of Mampong.

Born on December 31, 1939, Daasebre was known privately as Saint Oswald Gyimah-Kessie. An economist and lawyer, he served as Registrar of KNUST from 1991 until his retirement in 1999. He was enstooled as Mamponghene on August 25, 1996, following a long-standing chieftaincy dispute.

His leadership brought stability and progress to the Mampong traditional area, with a legacy of educational sponsorships and administrative reform. He held several key positions in traditional leadership structures, including Vice-President of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs and membership in the National House of Chiefs.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Janet Dorothy Gyimah-Kessie, and their daughter, Dr. Naana Mary Gyimah-Kessie.
