Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called for an end to derogatory remarks and unfounded accusations against the late Dr. Joseph Boakye Danquah, stressing his pivotal role in Ghana’s political history.

His remarks follow allegations that Tamale Central MP, Murtala Mohammed, labeled Dr. J.B. Danquah a “traitor” and a “CIA operative” during a parliamentary session on February 4, 2025. This led the Coalition for Youth Development in Okyeman to petition the Speaker of Parliament on March 7.

Speaking at the 60th Anniversary Remembrance Service held at the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in Kyebi on Sunday, March 9, Akufo-Addo unveiled a compendium featuring 60 commemorative statements in honor of JB Danquah.

He emphasized Danquah’s unwavering advocacy for the rule of law as the foundation of liberty and individual freedoms, which remains a cornerstone of Ghanaian democracy.

“The continued call for the entrenchment of the rule of law in our governance is the ultimate safeguard for liberty and individual freedoms. Today, this principle is deeply embedded in Ghanaian politics, and we must never abandon it.

“Despite JB Danquah’s monumental contributions to Ghana’s development, his name continues to be embroiled in unnecessary controversy, just as it was during his lifetime,” Akufo-Addo stated.

Representing the Minority Caucus in Parliament, Effutu MP Alexander Afenyo-Markin condemned the recent derogatory remarks made about JB Danquah and criticized the invasion of the former Finance Minister’s residence. He urged Ghanaians to reject divisive rhetoric and embrace national unity.

“Since the 1940s, no group has faced a smear campaign as persistent as that against Daddy Danquah and his associates. These are individuals who dedicated themselves to public service and national progress, yet they have been unfairly maligned.

“Let us leave here today with a renewed commitment to democracy, recognizing that it is not a privilege handed down through history but an ongoing struggle that requires courage and resolve.

“We must reject hate campaigns in any form and prioritize the unity and dignity of Ghana and Africa above all else,” Afenyo-Markin declared.

The Overlord of Akyem Abuakwa, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, also condemned the continued attacks on JB Danquah’s legacy, calling on Ghanaians to honor his contributions to the nation.

“Considering the immense sacrifices he made for our country, we have done little to truly honor his memory. Some individuals continue to spread misinformation and defame him, but we must not allow this to persist. Future generations must learn of JB Danquah’s sacrifices for Ghana,” he stated.
