At the Crans Montana Forum in Morocco, Ghana’s Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, advocated for urgent port reforms to cut trade costs and enhance economic integration within ECOWAS.
He highlighted excessive port charges and poor logistics as key barriers to intra-African trade, citing a failed poultry trade deal with Morocco that collapsed due to high tariffs. Afenyo-Markin stressed that inefficient transport corridors and inconsistent policies make trading with Europe and Asia easier than within Africa.
He called for coordinated infrastructure investments, harmonized customs procedures, and stronger regional industrial policies. He also warned that recent withdrawals by Sahelian countries from ECOWAS pose fresh threats to regional trade cohesion.
