The Chairman of Parliament’s Appointments Committee, Bernard Ahiafor, has stated that Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin strategically avoided direct involvement in the ministerial vetting chaos while subtly influencing events from behind the scenes.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Monday, February 3, the Adaklu MP detailed how the Effutu legislator distanced himself at critical moments to avoid direct association with the tensions that unfolded.

According to Ahiafor, the Minority Leader discreetly issued instructions but stepped out before the chaos erupted.

“I heard him asking them to do some of the things that they did, but when they were about to start, he left the room,” Ahiafor recounted.

He added that Afenyo-Markin returned later but positioned himself away from the commotion, ensuring he was not visibly linked to the fracas.

Ahiafor further alleged that Jerry Ahmed Shaib, one of the four MPs suspended over the incident, acted under Afenyo-Markin’s direct orders.

“I know that Jerry was under his instruction to move and stop Mintah Akandoh from taking the seat to the swamp,” he disclosed.

Additionally, he claimed the Minority Leader instructed his side to turn on their microphones and summon more members to the vetting room.

On the Speaker’s decision to suspend four MPs involved in the melee, Ahiafor suggested that the punishment could have been harsher.

“If we want to go into the nitty-gritty of this particular matter, they may suffer harsher punishment than the suspension,” he remarked.

Some have debated whether the two-week suspension was too severe, arguing that a shorter eight-day penalty would have sufficed.

The incident remains a subject of intense discussion as Parliament continues its proceedings.
