President John Dramani Mahama’s nominee for the District Chief Executive (DCE) position in the Ada East District, Kenneth Kabu Kanor, has been rejected by the local assembly.
During a confirmation vote held on Thursday, Kanor secured 24 “Yes” votes, representing 63.2% of the total but fell short of the required two-thirds majority for approval. Thirteen assembly members voted “No” (34.2%), with one ballot (2.6%) rejected. The outcome officially marks the nominee’s rejection.
This setback comes in contrast to three successful endorsements of Municipal Chief Executives (MCEs) in Ashaiman, Kpone Katamanso, and Tema West on the same day.
Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, who oversaw the confirmation processes, expressed concern over the rejection. She cautioned assembly members that delaying confirmations could hamper critical development and recruitment initiatives in the district.
“I told them, if you delay the confirmation, you delay development and recruitment,” she said. “A lot of recruitment is already underway, and the DCE could lobby for some assembly members to be employed. But without a DCE, those processes must go through coordinators and other channels.”
Madam Ocloo further warned against internal sabotage by aspirants hoping to be nominated in place of the president’s appointees. “If you think you are part of those shortlisted and are working against the nominee in hopes of being appointed yourself, you are looking outside the box,” she stated.
