Accra Academy Students Learn With Torch Lights and Candles After Power Disconnection by ECG

Accra Academy Senior High School is grappling with darkness after the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) disconnected its power supply due to unpaid bills, leaving students to study by torchlight and candles.

The campus, lacking in illumination, has turned to torches as a means for students to continue their studies as of 08:40 pm on Monday, February 19, according to reports confirmed by a visiting media representative.

A faculty member, who opted to remain unnamed, conveyed deep concern over the unprecedented situation, citing it as unparalleled during their teaching tenure.

The teacher recounted being informed by a colleague about ECG officials arriving at the school premises to sever the electricity supply due to outstanding debts. Even teachers, utilizing prepaid meters, were not exempt from the power outage.

Despite pleas and negotiation attempts, the ECG officials, purportedly from the head office, remained steadfast in their decision to disconnect the power.

Expressing apprehension regarding student safety and the potential negative impact on teaching and learning, the teacher implored the Electricity Company to reinstate the school’s power supply.

In reflection of the distressing circumstances, the teacher lamented, “Today marks the saddest day in my 31 years of teaching experience. I have never witnessed anything of this magnitude before. We were informed that ECG officials were on campus to disconnect the school due to outstanding debts. What is most disheartening is that even teachers residing on campus, who utilize prepaid meters, have been disconnected. Currently, we have approximately 3,000 students in school, and this is the dire situation we find ourselves in. If any harm befalls any of the students, who will be held accountable?”

“We reached out to the officials, yet they remained adamant, citing orders from higher authorities to disconnect us due to the owed amount. We are not even aware of the exact sum, and we are not the designated payers. Despite our efforts to prevent this situation, our pleas fell on deaf ears. I appeal to the leaders of ECG to prioritize the welfare of the students. I implore them to reconsider their actions and take the necessary steps.”
