The Ghana Police Service in the Upper West Region has dismantled a suspected drug trafficking network following a series of coordinated operations that led to the seizure of large quantities of suspected cannabis.
Over a four-week period, police carried out targeted operations across several districts, including Lawra District, Nadowli-Kaleo District, Wa Municipality, Lambussie District, and Wa East District.
According to the Upper West Regional Police Commander, Francis Yiribaare, a total of 218 compressed slabs, 54 parcels, and eight assorted consignments of substances believed to be Indian hemp were recovered during the operations.
On April 1, officers stationed at the Wa-Loho barrier intercepted a bus operated by VIP Jeoun Transport traveling from Wa to Jirapa, where 51 compressed slabs were discovered. Three suspects—Stephen Lomotey, Solomon King, and Urilius Tobopalee—were arrested in connection with the seizure.
In a separate operation on April 3, a patrol team intercepted a Toyota Corolla at Eremon in the Lawra District, leading to the recovery of 140 compressed slabs. Two additional suspects, Dennis Domoyel and Clovis Saame, were apprehended.
Police investigations suggest that the narcotics were being transported northbound toward Hamile, a known transit point near Ghana’s border.
DCOP Yiribaare indicated that the suspects are currently at various stages of investigation and prosecution, while the vehicles used in the operations have been impounded.
The Police Command has also issued a strong warning to transport operators and unions to remain vigilant, cautioning that vehicles used in drug trafficking could be confiscated and owners prosecuted.
The operation forms part of ongoing efforts by the Ghana Police Service to clamp down on narcotics trafficking and enhance security across the region.
