The Ghana Police Service has announced temporary road closures in Accra on Friday, March 6, 2026, as part of security and traffic management arrangements for Ghana’s 69th Independence Day celebration.
The event will take place at the Jubilee House, the official seat of government.
Affected roads
According to the police, the following roads will be temporarily closed:
• Liberation Road — from the Opeibea Intersection towards the Central Business District
• Independence Avenue — at the Ako Adjei by-pass
• Jawaharlal Nehru Road
Alternative routes for motorists
Motorists using Liberation Road are advised to use the following alternative routes:
• Kawukudi Road via the Kanda Highway to connect to Barnes Road toward the Central Business District
• Giffard Road toward Osu
Drivers on Independence Avenue will be diverted through:
• Kanda Highway to Ring Road Central
• 37 Intersection and adjoining routes
Traffic management measures
The police say traffic officers will be deployed across affected areas to guide motorists and direct vehicles to designated parking spaces and diversion points.
Authorities also warned that vehicles will not be allowed to park at unauthorized locations along the affected roads. Towing services will be used to remove abandoned, disabled, or wrongly parked vehicles.
However, security vehicles and vehicles transporting dignitaries will be granted access after undergoing security checks.
The Ghana Police Service has urged motorists to plan their journeys ahead of time and cooperate with officers on duty to ensure smooth traffic flow during the Independence Day celebrations.
