Tomato Prices Surge in Accra After Burkina Faso Attack Disrupts Supply

Tomato prices have spiked sharply across major markets in Accra following a recent terrorist attack on Ghanaian traders in Burkina Faso, disrupting a key supply route and triggering steep increases along the value chain.

Traders say the insecurity has forced them to depend largely on supplies from Togo, as sourcing tomatoes from Burkina Faso has become too risky. The shift has significantly driven up wholesale prices, with retailers and consumers bearing the brunt.

A visit to the CMB market by Citi Business News revealed that a large basket of tomatoes, previously sold at GH¢3,000, now costs between GH¢8,000 and GH¢9,000. Retail prices have also surged, with baskets that sold for GH¢300 now going for GH¢700 to GH¢800.

Some traders report even sharper hikes. A small bowl that previously sold for GH¢5 is now priced at GH¢20, while a medium-sized basket has jumped from between GH¢100 and GH¢200 to about GH¢600.

Traders warn that prolonged disruption could result in acute shortages if alternative supply channels remain strained. Many are calling on government to stabilise supply routes and boost local production to reduce reliance on imports.

The Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has indicated that government is working toward achieving year-round tomato production in Ghana. She made the remarks during a visit to injured traders receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital.

According to the Minister, strengthening domestic production will help prevent future supply shocks and reduce the country’s dependence on external sources, particularly in the wake of security threats affecting cross-border trade.
