Former British ambassador to the United States, Peter Mandelson, has been arrested by London’s Metropolitan Police on suspicion of misconduct in public office following fresh revelations about his association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The 72-year-old former diplomat was taken into custody as part of an ongoing investigation into communications between him and Epstein. Authorities confirmed that a man of his age was arrested in connection with alleged misconduct linked to his time in public office.

Mandelson had previously been removed from his post as Britain’s ambassador to Washington in September after details about the extent of his relationship with Epstein emerged. The controversy deepened after the U.S. Department of Justice released emails in late January showing exchanges between the two men. The correspondence reportedly suggested a closer relationship than previously acknowledged and indicated that Mandelson shared certain information with Epstein while serving as a minister in the government of former Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

The investigation reportedly began after Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s administration passed on relevant communications to law enforcement authorities.

Earlier this month, Mandelson resigned from the Labour Party and stepped down from his position in the House of Lords. He has previously expressed deep regret over his past association with Epstein but has not issued a public response regarding the latest developments.

In a related development, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the younger brother of King Charles III, was also arrested last week on suspicion of misconduct in public office over allegations that he shared confidential government documents with Epstein. He has consistently denied any wrongdoing connected to the disgraced financier.
