The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has cleared Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed to remain its parliamentary candidate for the Ayawaso East by-election, following investigations into allegations of vote buying during the party’s parliamentary primary.

The decision was contained in a report submitted by a three-member committee set up by the party to probe claims that some aspirants induced delegates during the primary held on Saturday, February 7, 2026.

Baba Jamal, who won the primary, is expected to file his nomination with the Electoral Commission on Wednesday, February 11.

The committee was constituted after reports emerged alleging that television sets and cash were distributed to delegates, sparking public debate and renewed concerns about vote buying and monetisation in internal party elections.

According to the NDC, the committee reviewed complaints from delegates and party members, assessed available evidence, and engaged relevant stakeholders before reaching its conclusions. While it acknowledged broader concerns about inducement in party primaries, the committee found no grounds to disqualify Baba Jamal from contesting the by-election.

Baba Jamal has consistently denied the allegations, insisting that his campaign complied fully with the party’s rules and guidelines.

The Ayawaso East parliamentary seat became vacant following the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Naser Toure Mahama, prompting the need for a by-election.

The NDC is expected to formally communicate the findings of the committee to the public as it intensifies preparations and campaigning ahead of the by-election.
