Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, has emerged winner of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary for the Ayawaso East Constituency.

The primary was held on Saturday, February 7, 2026, to elect the party’s candidate for the upcoming Ayawaso East by-election.

According to official results from the two voting centres, Baba Jamal secured a total of 431 votes to defeat his closest contender, Hajia Amina Adam, who polled 399 votes. Mohammed Ramme garnered 88 votes, Dr Yakubu Azindow obtained 45 votes, while Mohammed Najib received one vote.

The closely fought contest attracted significant attention within the constituency and beyond, particularly amid discussions surrounding campaign conduct during the primary. Reports from the voting centres indicated that Baba Jamal’s campaign distributed items including 32-inch television sets and boiled eggs to delegates. However, the former Deputy Minister of Energy maintained that the gestures were acts of goodwill and not intended to influence the voting outcome.

With his victory, Baba Jamal will now lead the NDC into the Ayawaso East by-election, as the party seeks to retain the seat.

The outcome of the primary contrasted with earlier projections by Global InfoAnalytics. Prior to the vote, the firm’s Executive Director, Mussa Dankwah, had predicted that Baba Jamal’s support was unlikely to exceed 38 percent, based on polling data and voter sentiment in the constituency.

According to the projection, Hajia Amina Adam, widow of the late Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, Mahama Naser Toure, was leading with an estimated 54 percent support ahead of the primary. Mr Dankwah had noted that even under the most favourable conditions, a late swing in Baba Jamal’s favour appeared improbable.
