A patient receiving treatment at the Awutu Beraku Health Centre has died after collapsing while returning from buying sachet water near the Breku lorry station on Wednesday, January 21, 2026.
The deceased, yet to be officially identified but believed to be in his 50s, reportedly collapsed beside a parked truck in front of the Awutu Beraku Police Station, about 15 metres from the health facility, shortly after purchasing and drinking the water.
Eyewitnesses said people at the scene rushed to alert both the police and staff of the health centre, but no immediate medical assistance was provided before the man died.
Some witnesses indicated that health workers initially assumed the patient had absconded from the facility, despite his medical folder reportedly being at the centre.
An eyewitness recounted that the man collapsed immediately after drinking the sachet water. According to the witness, efforts to draw the attention of the nurses were unsuccessful, as they allegedly believed the patient had left without permission. The witness added that although police officers later arrived at the scene, no medical response was forthcoming before the man struggled and died. The deceased was said to have had a plaster and a cannula on his arm at the time.
Residents who witnessed the incident have condemned what they described as a poor response by both health workers and the police, calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
One resident stated that despite repeated calls for help, no assistance was offered until the man died, while another criticised police officers for allegedly failing to render aid and instead asking motorbike riders to transport the patient.
The police have since conveyed the body to the mortuary for preservation, pending identification and the arrival of the deceased’s family.
