
President John Dramani Mahama has declared three days of national mourning in honour of the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, who passed away on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at the Ridge Hospital in Accra, aged 76.
According to a statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, the period of mourning will begin on Friday, October 24, and end on Sunday, October 26, 2025.
During this period, all national flags are to fly at half-mast across government buildings, public institutions, and Ghana’s diplomatic missions around the world. The presidency described the gesture as a mark of respect for the former First Lady’s immense contributions to national development.
The statement highlighted Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings’ lifelong commitment to women’s empowerment, child welfare, and social justice. It praised her for her “dedication and commitment” to the advancement of women in Ghana, particularly through her advocacy and leadership of the 31st December Women’s Movement.
“The Government extends its deepest condolences to the family, her children, and all who mourn this irreplaceable loss. May her soul rest in perfect peace,” the statement concluded.
Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings was a prominent political and social figure who served as Ghana’s First Lady from 1981 to 2001. She was also known for her strong advocacy for gender equality and her significant role in shaping Ghana’s democratic and social landscape.
