Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin Elected Chairperson of IPU Africa Group

The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has been unanimously elected as the Chairperson of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Africa Group during the 151st IPU Assembly held in Geneva, Switzerland.

The election marks a significant milestone for Ghana, placing the country at the center of parliamentary diplomacy both within Africa and on the global stage.

Speaker Bagbin, who also serves as the President of the Conference of Speakers and Presidents of African Legislatures (CoSPAL), will spearhead initiatives aimed at strengthening Africa’s unified voice on key global matters affecting governance, peace, and sustainable development.

In his acceptance remarks, he expressed deep gratitude to African parliamentary delegations for their confidence and support, commending their unity and consensus in the election process.

He succeeds Ms. Angela Thokozile Didiza, the Speaker of South Africa’s National Assembly, and has pledged to enhance collaboration among African parliaments while advancing transparency, accountability, and democratic governance across the continent.

Speaker Bagbin’s leadership is expected to further Ghana’s influence in shaping continental and international legislative dialogues, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to democratic values and effective parliamentary cooperation.
